Leadership Development Plan
Description
This chapter focused on playing up your strengths rather than improving on your weaknesses. We all have our own ideas about what our personal strengths and weaknesses are and this survey may surprise some students with their results. Sometimes we think of a certain trait as a strength of ours, when in reality it is not. Other times, we completely overlook certain strengths that we have.
1. Plan on 30 minutes to complete the survey at: http://www.viacharacter.org/www/ (Links to an external site.). The survey evaluates you for 24 character strengths. Download a copy of your strength survey for submission.
2. Prepare a leadership development plan based on the survey.
- Take your top five strengths as identified in this survey and discuss them with regard to Table 6.3 (Northouse, p. 133). Are your strengths clustered in one area? Are they spread among various areas? Does this have any significance to your interpretation of the results? Explain.
- Select 2 character strengths from your top five to examine in detail. Discuss these two strengths in light of the concepts covered in this course. Why/how do these strengths best suit/fit you?
- What is your leadership development plan to further develop these strengths? Your leadership development plan should outline a few concrete steps you plan to take to further develop your strengths e.g. if teamwork were one of your strengths, your plan might include volunteering to lead the team that is organizing your next sorority/fraternity fund raiser.
- Based on the video lecture, include one example for each strength where you might use it ‘unintelligently’ or describe a situation where you might be tempted to use it improperly.
