LAVC Women in Photographer Margaret Bourke White and Cindy Sherman Paper

Description

Margaret Bourke-White and Cindy Sherman were two women who approached photography from a new angle and whose names are fundamental to the discussion of photography as an art. Bourke-White was a documentary photographer who witnessed some of the most important parts of the 21st century, including the apartheid in South Africa, the cultural revolution led by Mahatma Gandhi, and the battlegrounds of World War II. Sherman took a new approach to photography, focusing on the sexist and/or stereotyped women portrayed in films and advertisement. She disguises herself as the drunk party girl, provocative housewife, or victim of domestic abuse.
