Description

Family Interview
Part 1
I in this interview, I decided to talk to a couple I met during one of the weekend trips while they were also enjoying one of the countless trips they have in the course of the year, which they use to develop their relationship away from the usual routine.
Parent 1: Robin is white guy aged 39. He works at a coal mine as a supervisor. Robin is a Christian who was in a previous marriage for 14 years but later got divorced before engaging in the present marriage; he left the marriage with 3 kids; however, he co-parents with their mother.
Parent 2: Haven is an African American lady aged 37. She juggles between part time jobs since she did not manage to join college. Haven has been married twice before the present marriage but divorced because both marriages were patriarchy. Haven is a Christian and has 4 kids, 3 biological ones from the first marriage and a stepson from the second marriage.
How do you know this family and why did you select them for your interview?
I got to know this couple while on the same trip they were in where I overheard them converse a memory on how they met and their story caught my attention. I chose to interview them because theirs is not the ordinary kind of marriage but they have founded a family where the ties in the family are comparable to those of the traditional household or more. To add, the story of their marriage prompted me of a TV show, The Brady Bunch, when they narrated the story of their life and six kids like they have raised them from birth.
How did you prepare yourself for parenthood? could you have better prepared for parenthood? If so, how?
Since they married later in life, they had discussed about each other’s previous marriages
and thus, they both were aware of what marriage was all about. Nevertheless, both mutually
agreed to move into Haven’s home where Robin’s kids can regularly visit. When this happened, they were aware and settled with knowing that they have six kids in total, three boys and three girls.
What family traditions, values or beliefs are you passing on to your child (ren)?
One of the values that they have both held strong since they married is to treat each other equally regardless of their backgrounds and this there have ensured that the kids treat other equally. The family celebrates holidays together, such as thanksgiving and Christmas, which they hold as a family. Another thing is that everyone in the family helps with household chores and also assisting the younger ones with their school work. The couple also takes a vacation once in a year away from the family in order to build their relationship.
What happens when your child disobeys you or breaks the family rules?
The fundamental way in which the couple deals with disobedience is through talking to the kids particularly because there are teenagers who cannot be spanked.
What goals or expectations do you have for your children?
The main expectations that the couple have for the kids especially the teenagers is helping in the house with chores like cleaning and assisting the smaller ones. On the other hand, they expect them to perform in school and also lay their problems or issues on the table without holding back.
What influences have contributed to your parenting practices
Basically, the couple’s parenting practices have been influenced by their past experiences in the previous marriages since they are devoted in making things different in their present
marriage and make it work. The two also attend parenting classes offered at their community.
Discuss your view on education. Are you involved with your child’s school?
The couple completely value education because they create time for all the children to
carry out and complete their school work which they also assist the kids with and the kids also assist each other.
Explain how your life has changed since becoming a parent.
Both parents share the same view on parenting, which they say is not easy especially for their kind of marriage because they are required to treat all the six kids equally, including Haven’s stepson when he comes visiting. They are also mandated to control their disciplining skills in order to not seem biased.
Is parenthood what you expected? Why or why not?
Irrespective of being in previous marriages, the couple feels that parenthood is not easy particularly for their kind of family. The reason is these kids are raised differently from a tender age and, thus changing some beliefs that do not seem good becomes a challenge. However, the parenting classes help them maneuver.
A “typical day” as a parent? counting the sweetest and challenging moments
Every other day revolves around being with the children and working in their respective jobs, however sitting at home in the evening with such a big family is the sweetest moment, but listening and giving attention to all kids is challenging.
How do you view your primary role as a parent?
The primary role for both parents is being there for their kids regardless of the situation.
What advice would you give to a new parent?
Robin’s advice is “when something does not work, let it be a lesson and do not regret
it” whereas Haven advices that “everything transpires for a purpose and every encounter I have faced has given me the extended family I have today.”
“Knowing what I know now about being a parent, I would have attended parenting
classes early enough since the lessons have been incredibly helpful.

Part 2: Reflection
Lessons learned about the family
From the interview I held with these parents, I have learned that everything in life can be done if only we set our mindsets to it. In spite the detail that both parties have been in failed marriages, they did not lose hope at that they now have a family that are devoted to maintain.
Available community resources
One community resource that I am aware could be of so much help is the Wellness family retreat that involves escaping from the family burnout. The retreat accommodates parents and their kids to a cottage outside town inform of a family vacation that is very affordable. The services are available online where families make plans on their preferred time of the year.
Ways of supporting and engaging this family
For one I could commend them for their efforts towards raising this family, however my opinion in regards to discipline is that timeout and minimal punishments for the smaller kids are once in a while important since the kids will realize their mistakes and the reason for being grounded. Talks are at times easily forgotten. Spanking is however discouraged since some kids tend to become aggressive.
How to involve a family and the community in child development and learning
From the above interview, this is obviously a very busy and overwhelmed family, as a result they might not be available for many community activities, therefore online engagements may be preferable, which they can look into when at home in the evening afterwork and when the kids leave school. Some activities include; parenting groups and social meetings.
