Allison: 1. Mindfulness (Vipassana meditation,) fosters self-awareness by becoming fully in-touch with all physical and emotional feelings or sensations. The practice helped inmates become aware of feelings of fear, greed, and anger. More importantly, it helps realize that all of these feelings are temporary and that we should not make impulsive decisions in a moment of emotional change. It builds a positive mind, and teaches that crime is only possible if a person’s mind/ consciousness is negative. This resulted in many of the inmates wanting to change into better people and members of society.

2. Kiran Bedi’s leadership style took a completely different approach to prison reform. Though there is truth that certain actions must result in punishment, Bedi knew that there were larger issues that must be fixed within the inmates. She treated the inmates as human beings by interacting with them, singing, dancing or simply speaking to them in a humane manner in order to build trust. Aside from this, Bedi knew that the inmates were only serving time temporarily, and if they are to return to normal society, they must learn to act as a normal members of society. She focused on solving the larger issue of a criminal’s mental state, as someone with a negative mind will only commit more crimes once they are released. This went against the former concept of punishing inmates, to instill fear in order for them to become afraid of behaving poorly. Because she gained great trust, she convinced the inmates that they were the ones negatively harming society, not the other way around.

David: Vipassana meditation helps. Everyone to deep self-discovery of the mind and emotions. It also allows the persons to reflect on past events, whether the memories are positive or negative. This meditation opens the persons minds to allow things of the past what happened and where they are mentally andemotional with recent memories. Kiran’s leadership is to transform and change. She was not willing to give up She had her goals and she was also an innovative thinker who wanted to think outside the rim of the plate. Therefore, she was open to new ideas which led to Vipassana. Inmates who wanted to change and becom better for their lives. She also encouraged others so that they would be motivated to give themselves another chance in life after their release.
