Read/watch the content shared by two other members in your group. You need to either respond to someone whose post hasn’t been commented on yet or provide a unique perspective on the piece of media. In each respond to the following questions:
- Who do you think is the intended audience of this piece of advice or the target of the expectations? What experiences of parenthood or being a caregiver are included and excluded?
- Think of this in terms of intersectionality. You need to either identify at least one group of individuals’ whose experience isn’t reflected in this piece of media or indicate why this advice/expectations apply to all members in the intended audience.
- Is the advice/expectations consistent with what we have learned in class? Be sure to explain your reasoning. Include at least one clear example to justify your position.
- How does this piece of media relate to the Discussion Reading(s) you completed?
- Is the piece of media consistent or inconsistent with the Discussion Reading(s)? Use at least one example to justify your position. Include in-text citations to identify which article you are using for support.

This video provides a helpful list of tips to ensure that new parents are making the most out of the years they spend raising their child(ren). The first point is to cherish the milestones; Peterson stresses the importance of making sure parents are not taking those steps for granted because one second the child is a newborn and the next they’re off to kindergarten (2022). Second, parents are reminded to eat meals as a family. Peterson makes a point that people that are alone do not eat well; as humans, we are social eaters (2022). Third, parents should teach their children to be responsible. Some children grow up to become totally reliant on their parents for even small things. By teaching children to have responsibility at a young age, they develop skills that help them to solve problems and expect to work hard for what they want (2022). Next, the narrator wants parents to teach their children the difference between trust and naivety. By having naive trust, children are more likely to become hurt by those that take advantage of them (2022). Peterson makes another point that bad parenting habits can be passed down from generation to generation. Breaking the cycle of toxic parenting helps set future generations up for emotional success. One of the most important points that Peterson made was that of electronics and exposure. It’s not necessarily the content that children are exposed to, it’s the amount of time that is spent on electronics (2022). One of the final points that is made is to ensure that parents and children have boundaries. Setting up healthy boundaries between parent and child allows the children to understand that they need to set boundaries in every other aspect of their lives. Finally, parents are encouraged to allow their children to take risks. Without failure, children will never experience the bliss of success (2022).

The Only Parenting Advice You Really Need
The article gives “13 essential pieces of parenting advice.” Some of the topics include planning random acts of kindess, letting your kids fail in order to learn self-sufficiency, modeling brave behavior by taking healthy risks, not becoming a short order cook, and having them eat what the parent makes. It also mentions taking care your self first before everyone else in order to be a fully engaged parent. I found this article and other ones that were similar in nature interesting because many of these pieces of advice are directed at people in more of a comfortable socioeconomic situation. I could see some of this advice being very challenging for single parent families or lower socioeconomic families.
