1. Content: Provide a brief synopsis of the talk. What is his approach? What is the main message of this recorded talk? What is the role of language in children’s behavior? 2. Connection: How is Derek’s talk related to the textbook (Chapter 10)? Define Opposıtıonal Defıant Dısorder (ODD) according to DSM-5 and provide diagnostic criteria and age of usual onset. Highlight some important concepts and theories you read about in the chapter. Are children born to be aggressive and eventually become killers? How does parenting affect misconduct disorder in children? How do players in the school setting perpetuate disruptive behavior in children and teenagers? Always refer to page numbers in the readings and put in bold psychological vocabulary important (~150 words)
3. Critical Thinking: The school-to-prison pipeline leads to the criminalization of childhood and is a zero-tolerance policy. Originally, the policy mandated schools to punish and penalize students who had brought drugs or guns to school. Sadly this school policy extended to target many more at-risk and disenfranchised students and included offenses nonthreatening or nonviolent offenses such as violation of dress codes, disruptive behavior, or defiant or affectionate behavior towards authority figures. The American Bar Association is pleading to shut the school-to-prison program, see here. Impulsivity can lead to faulty decision making and inattention may cause an individual to commit minor crimes. Our US prisons are overpopulated with inmates who suffer mental disorders- half of the prison inmates suffer from ADHD (Young et al)!
