“Your paper should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, no big fonts. No formal citing is necessary (But please attribute quotes and list any books/websites you directly reference.).

Please visit an exhibition (due to Covid this is probably not your best option, but if you should happen to go see one of the shows at JMU in the Duke Hall Gallery, you may write about that) or artist presentation online and write about your experience. (see some examples below but also feel free to send me a link to something you would like to write about: should be a video like the Art 21 videos from PBS, or some kind of presentation by the artist… a TED talk for example. I am here to help if you don’t know what you would like to talk about.

What I do not want to read: A book report about the artist ala wikipedia/google.

What I DO want to read: Your personal opinion about the work/presentation viewed, questions you have about the work, how you feel it relates to art/culture in an historical, personal, social context, etc. (not all categories may apply but remember those critical “lenses” for looking at work and try to look at your artist with an open mind.) If you write about an exhibition at a museum/gallerywhich features multiple artists you may want to focus on the theme of the show and how you feel the work fits into that narrative.
