Jackson State University Stepfamilies Divorce and Remarriage Discussion Question

Jackson State University Stepfamilies Divorce and Remarriage Discussion Question

Description

3 discussion for marriage and living and sex Ed

Children in stepfamilies experience multiple stresses and challenges. It is important for parents and stepparents to understand what children may be facing. After reading the chapter, what advice would you give to a parent of children in a stepfamily? What advice would you give to a stepparent in a stepfamily?

This chapter discusses intimacy and the roller coaster ride of loss of intimacy in divorce and newfound intimacy in remarriage, resulting in stepfamilies. Intimacy becomes complicated in divorce when a close relationship turns to the deterioration of the marriage. Current statistics indicate that half of first marriages end in divorce. For second marriages, the rate of divorce is somewhat higher.

Think about the families that you know. Do you feel that your own experiences show that half of first marriages end in divorce? The statistic is true, but have families you know experienced this similarly?

Why do you think the rate of divorce is higher for second marriages?

Many ponder the question, “How does one know when the process of healing after divorce is over?” The answer to this question is perhaps when the person can talk openly about divorce without considerable anger, guilt, remorse, or feelings of failure or when the person can fully accept the divorce as part of her or his life that does not preclude future happiness. What do you believe after reading Chapter 15 is the answer to this question?
