There is limited research surrounding the long-term effect of ankle taping as way to support the ankle on stability and strength of the joint. The literature that does exists focuses on a sport specific population, short-term effects, or limited muscle groups (). There have been many debates in the orthopedic medical community regarding the validity of taping ankles before practice or games. On one hand there is the theory that ankle tape inhibits the muscles used to stabilize the ankle, leading to degeneration of said muscles. Others theorize that the ankle tape is not utilized long enough to have those type of effects. The data produced by this study could lead to a new wave of preventative medicine for athletes regarding ankle health.
