Influencing the political environment
Question Description
I don’t know how to handle this Management question and need guidance.
The article I chose for this week’s discussion is called “Rail Strike Averted After White House Brokers ‘Tentative’ Deal—Here’s What You Need To Know” by Robert Hart. This article talks about unions and freight rail companies being in the process of a tentative deal regarding pay and working conditions for tens of thousands of rail workers. To avoid a union strike, The Biden Administration has decided to get involved to avoid the possibility of a shutdown in freight operations. Hart’s article entails the repercussions of a freight operations shutdown, detailing how costly this could be for Americans. As the economy recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic and the steep increase in inflation, freight operations shutdown is estimated to cost roughly $2 billion per day. If union workers decide to strike, many industries will be impacted. In conclusion to this article, unions will vote on the agreement without an estimated time but have agreed that a strike will not occur.
Chapter 15 goes into depth regarding the employment relationship. “Employees are a market stakeholder of business” (Lawrence & Weber,2020). Learning the impact that an industry can cause to the economy resonates with this statement. Unions are defined as a legal right to organize for employees. “Negotiate with employers over wages, working conditions, and other terms of employment. Employers are not required by law to agree to the union’s demands, but they are required to bargain in good faith” (Lawrence & Weber,2020). As mentioned in the article, rail workers are requesting these basic employment rights and failure to meet these demands can cause a union strike which will be extremely damaging to an already-struggling economy. What was interesting learning from Chapter 15, unionization rates are low in the U.S. “Since the mid-1950s, the proportion of American workers represented by unions has declined”. (Lawrence & Weber, 2020). Even with low union rates, this has been very impactful.
