HUMN 4030 Walden University Crisis Response for Children and Adolescents Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a humanities discussion question and need a reference to help me learn.
Antonia is a 16-year-old adolescent attempting to make the school dance team. This is her second year trying out for the squad. Last year, the team captain remarked that Antonia dances well but was too big to dance with the team. For the past year, Antonia experienced pushing, name-calling, and jokes about her weight. To prepare for dance tryouts, Antonia has been starving herself and vomiting food. She desperately wants to be accepted and would forego food for days to lose weight. Her teacher makes a referral to your office in the school’s wellness center because Antonia looks pale and nauseated. As the behavioral health technician, you believe that she may be experiencing anorexia, although she has not received a formal diagnosis.
Post a response to the two part discussion questions:
- What signs and symptoms of a mental health crisis is the person exhibiting?
- What would your initial response be to the person in the case study?
- What non-clinical intervention would you implement to help the person manage the crisis, and why?
- What is one ethical and/or legal consideration you would make when responding, and why
- What is vicarious trauma? What are three signs/symptoms of vicarious trauma?
- How might working with children and adolescents who are experiencing mental health crises increase your risk of vicarious trauma? Provide an example.
- What are two self-care strategies that you would adopt to prevent vicarious trauma when working with children and adolescents experiencing mental health crises?
