hr353 Unit 1: Discussion

Introduction

Discussions allow for engagement, participation, and application of our course content. Online discussions will be available at the start of each week. There will be questions each week to answer based on that week’s reading and classroom material. I encourage each of you to have a voice and add your unique experiences by responding to others’ answers, asking questions, or adding perspective as appropriate. Students will play a significant role in this active-learning process. Students will be responsible for facilitating discussion of the course content via discussion boards. The goals are to stimulate intellectual growth and personal development, integrate and apply course material effectively, and demonstrate critical thinking about major topics in HRM.

Directions

For Unit 1, you will address the following tasks in one discussion post (Primary Post) before responding to your peers (Peer Responses):

Choose one topic question/prompt to answer from each chapter’s content.

Chapter 1 Content:  Choose one topic question/prompt. 

Discuss one of the major responsibilities of human resource departments and why that responsibility is important for organizational effectiveness.

Describe one ethical issue in human resource management and how that issue may influence organizational effectiveness.

List and explain a competency important in human resource management. Is this a competency that you feel is a strength of yours or would like to develop? Why?

• Why is it important that managers and leaders have knowledge and skills related to human resource management?
• Chapter 2 Content: Choose one topic question/prompt.
• Examine one trend in the labor force currently and how that may affect human resource management.
• Explain employee empowerment and the role it plays in organizations.

List ways that HR can support organizational strategies for growth, quality, and efficiency.

Describe how the need for flexibility can affect human resource management.
