Often the media has a tremendous impact on the general public’s perceptions of what it means to be a crime victim. In some cases the media glorifies the victim and other times victims are demonized. Throughout the course, we have discussed the scope of victimology, the extent of criminal victimization, and the costs of being a victim, among other key issues. Keeping in mind the information discussed in class, review media sources (online news sources, paper newspapers, informative magazines, television or radio news channels, etc.) and find a story about crime victim(s). You will quickly find that stories/editorials involving victimization are not only common, but are so widespread it is increasingly difficult to find news articles unrelated to victimization! Knowing this, be somewhat selective in choosing an article. Review a few short news articles from one or two different news sources before selecting an article (if nothing else you will be more knowledgeable about national and world affairs!)

After you’ve selected a news article you are interested in, read it carefully – a few times. Write a reaction addressing the following questions:

  1. What is the title, date, and source of your article? Provide the link if found online.
  2. How is the victim(s) portrayed in the article?
  3. Is any information presented that might influence the general public to perceive the victim(s) in a certain way?
  4. Can you think of any information that the article left out about the victim(s) that might be important to mention?
  5. What is your reaction to this article and to the victim(s)?

Note: It is very important to read all original posts and replies before posting so you do not repeat content. Do not attempt to stop a discussion, but rather move it forward. Be respectful of others who disagree with you.

At times, the issues raised in this course may be controversial and/or highly emotionally charged for some students. I ask and expect that every member of this class respect each person’s position, regardless of your agreement or disagreement with a particular view.
