HD 101 CSU San Marcos Intimacy v Isolation Discussion Response
Question Description
I’m working on a other writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
The concept of development was originally proposed to help social scientists understand childhood and adolescence, but has since grown into a field that focuses on issues of the life course. However, theories of how life course transitions happen and the definitions of different stages have changed over historical time. Erik Erikson discused various stages in terms of the central conflict people face- for those ages 18-26 he described this conflict as that of intimacy v. isolation. This set the stage for what Jeffrey Arnett proposed emerging adulthood, different from adolescence and adulthood. Arnett proposed that because of changes in trends in modern society, including delayed marriage and parenthood, increasing financial barriers and longer time invested in education, that emerging adulthood is a distinct experience. He characterized this time as one of identity exploration, in which people explore various possibilities in work and love.
In your content response, discuss whether (and how) you think evidence (including your own personal experiences, but you must use other evidence as well) supports the proposal of this new life stage. Does this concept help us understand life course transitions better among certain populations? Would we expect this life stage to be helpful for understanding 18-25 year olds in all cultures? How might cultural variation shape what we understand to characterize emerging adulthood?
