This set the stage for what Jeffrey Arnett proposed emerging adulthood, different from adolescence and adulthood. Arnett proposed that because of changes in trends in modern society, including delayed marriage and parenthood, increasing financial barriers and longer time invested in education, that emerging adulthood is a distinct experience. He characterized this time as one of identity exploration, in which people explore various possibilities in work and love.
