Answer Discussion

Please answer BOTH of the questions.

This week our discussion will be a bit different. Periodically, we have discussions which pull us up out of the details of circuits and look at the broader picture of engineering in the context of an organization, society, and the world at large with all of the interdependencies and impacts.

Engineering is known to be comprised mostly of men. In 2018 a UK report on the state of engineering found that 12% of engineers are female (https://www.engineeringuk.com/research/briefings/gender-disparity-in-engineering).

One reason for the gender disparity in engineering could be unconscious bias. Watch this video on Unconscious Bias: https://youtu.be/rbe5D3Yh43o. Types of bias include affinity bias, perception bias, confirmation bias, the halo effect, and groupthink. Define one of these types of bias and identify how it may be present and relevant to the gender disparity. How could you overcome or address this bias?

The type of bias I chose to review is the confirmation bias. This is the process of being prejudice towards a person because a person ignores new information that goes against their beliefs or makes it less credible. This can be present in the gender disparity because some people look at the information women introduce as less believable because of their gender. This bias can be overcome by presenting other sources of information like an article that also backs up the new details.

According to Oxford Languages, groupthink is defined as the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility. Other sources define it as a psychological phenomenon to where a group desires harmony, conformity, and/or cohesiveness to such a high degree they agree at all costs which tends to lead to poor decision-making. This practice does minimize conflict but also reduces the amount of critical thinking and original or contrary ideas to be produced. Groupthink can cause gender disparities simply from one person in the group having a negative impression or mindset about a specific gender and because no one wants to disrupt the harmony or cause conflict within the group, the whole group will follow along in that method of rationalization. There are several strategies to overcome or help prevent groupthink from happening. Recruiting a diverse team in not only culture but thinking as well is a great strategy to help prevent group think. Also celebrating and promoting diverse thinking and perspectives is another great strategy. If people feel their diverse ideas will be heard and appreciated, they will be more likely to continue thinking that way.
