Grand Canyon University Coding Qualitative Data Discussion

Description

Coding qualitative data can be time-consuming and arduous. The first step is to read over the information once over. After the first reading, you will want to take notes to see how that data works together and if anything sticks out to you. After reading more and more data, you can take those different notes and highlight the different colors and make them into different categories (Mod U: Powerful Concepts in Social Science, 2016). After further reading, you may need to make changes to these categories based on any emerging trends. Once you’ve got your categories, it is important to make sure that you document why you made these categories so that you can describe any changes that will back you up rather than be used against you. This will help solidify your findings to help reduce any bias.

Inductive coding means that you come up with the information on how you want to organize the data as you comprehend it. On the other hand, deductive coding is when you start with a specific method on how you want to analyze the data. Essentially, are you coming in with the rules or are you going to let the data make its own rules based on what you interpret them to be?
