What are the key characteristics and history/background of the organization?
- Why was the nonprofit started?
- Why was it able to obtain 501(c)(3) status (i.e. what is its IRS-approved charitable activity)?
- What subsector is the nonprofit located in? Could it also fit in another subsector(s)?
- What was the mission of the organization initially and what is it now?
- What are the key programs of the nonprofit? How well do these activities align with the current mission? Is there mission drift?
- How would you describe the leadership and governance of the organization?
- What type of board does the nonprofit have: elected, self-perpetuating or hybrid?
- Is the board more a managing or governing board or somewhere in between (see relevant discussion in Worth Chapter 4)?
- What kind of relationship does the executive director have with the board?
- Which funding sources does the nonprofit rely on and what are its relationships with funders?
- Provide a pie chart with the percentage of funding from each major source (government, foundations, individual donations, business, earned income).
- Describe the funding relationships the nonprofit has with government, foundations, and any businesses (include entity names).
- How much do volunteers support the work of the nonprofit?
- Discuss any earned income the nonprofit makes. Does it have to pay UBIT (unrelated business income tax) on it?
- How involved is the nonprofit in advocacy work?
- Has it taken the 501(h) election? If not, why?
- Has it engaged in lobbying? If so, describe. If not, why?
- Has it engaged in advocacy that is not lobbying? If so, describe.
- Describe any partnerships and coalitions the nonprofit is involved in around advocacy.
- How does the nonprofit measure up on evaluating its work?
- Does it have a theory of change or logic model?
- Does it evaluate its programming? If so, which performance measurement tools does it use?
- Does it evaluate both short-term outputs and long-term outcomes? Describe how.
- What are the organization’s main challenges (both those you and the nonprofit identify)?
- What are your recommendations for how the nonprofit can improve? (these are just for you to put in your paper, not share with the nonprofit)
