In the article “The Dark Side of Growth” the authors bring up many valid points about what CEO’s must be willing to accept when in their roles. It is easy and fun when times are going well. On the other hand the CEO must be innovative and forward thinking in order to successfully survive the down times that any growing company will endure. Jeff Bezos is a good example of the “roller coaster” leader of Amazon. Amazon has had many successful launches and also has had some large failures. What makes Jeff Bezos different from other CEOs is the fact that he shows management within Amazon and the shareholders that while one item may be a “flop” there are ten other projects behind it that could be winners. This allows others to not become discouraged and seek a new leader or new employment. This is similar to the business case we saw in the article where the CEO was asked to find his replacement but did so good and managing to turn things around the board kept him. Jeff Bezos is an innovator and is always forward thinking and that is important because when you are a growing business what will likely allow you to get past that period is innovation and resources. Jeff Bezos commits whatever resources are needed to a project and allows people to make mistakes as that is how the company has come back stronger after each successful and unsuccessful product launch.
