The text defines an ecosystem as a web of internal employees, resources, and activities, and external partners, advisers, customers, suppliers, service providers, and distribution channels. It is important to you use your ecosystem to attract the talent needed to grow a venture. When beginning the process of attracting talent, the Three R’s (Relationships, Roles, Rewards) are important to consider. Consider the relationship in which you’d like to partner with. Will it be someone you have an existing relationship with like a spouse, co-worker, etc? Will you look outside your group and evaluate how the relationship will affect the ability to have frank conversations. Roles must be considered in order to have a decision-making model to ensure the ability to have make different kinds of decisions. Finally, how will rewards be split such as salary, benefits, equity.

Most entrepreneurs don’t have the full skills or capacity needed to launch a new venture which makes it crucial to attract talent. Selecting the right talent allows them to expand the capabilities of the founder and glean new perspectives to develop the business model. Instead of using a standard organizational chart to hire, entrepreneurs are better suited to hire based on the sequence of activities needed to achieve milestones and then hire talent with the skills to help the business reach those milestones.

It’s important to maintain flexibility in roles early on as many employees of a new venture need to step in where needed. It’s also important to not inflate titles or give stock equity to early employees as a form of cheap compensation without deep consideration of its long term value should the venture meet their desired milestones. An entrepreneur should look for new talent utilizing referrals from trusted advisors, former co-workers and investors.
