Review the three temptations of Christ as they are presented in the Bible; pay attention to the exact questions the devil asked and to Christ’s answers. Compare with Dostoevsky’s account of the 3 temptations in Ivan’s “poem” about the Grand Inquisitor. In your response paper, discuss the meaning and the significance of the 3 questions within Ivan’s story. Then, in in Book 6 we learn about Elder Zosima, his life and his teaching. In your paper, look for the ways in which Zosima indirectly addresses the three “colossal questions” (temptations) that the Grand Inquisitor spoke about. Find a couple of passages in Zosima’s “Talks and Homilies” (or in his personal story) and compare them with the Grand Inquisitor ideas. For example, you may talk about the Inquisitor idea of power/ leadership vs. Zosima’s vision of brotherhood. Or you may look at the Grand Inquisitor’s “love” for his “weak and worthless” subjects vs. Zosima’s discourse on love. Or you may explore the difference between their views of the role of miracles.


