Florida Institute of Technology Airplanes Mission Memorandum

Question Description

I’m working on a management discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

You are a secret agent sent to investigate what is believed to be an enemy aircraft. You are examining the unusual aircraft through binoculars from a safe vantage point in the bushes about 1/2 mile away. It is your job to write a memo explaining what you believe is the aircraft’s mission.

High wing with a 5 degree anhedral and a 60′ wing span. The composition of the wing is not metal or composite, but it is like that of a Ridged Inflatable Boat. You see hinges near the middle of the wing and the wing seems very thick. There are no flaps or slats that you can see. The seats are for five total in single file in an open air cabin. There are three 12 inch x 8 inches wide tires and a contact footprint of 6×8 inches per tire. The writing on the side of the tires was small so you had to zoom in to read the tire pressure of 70 psi. You can see the cockpit instrumentation and the airspeed indicator shows a white arc from 25 – 60, a green arc from 60-120, and a red line of 200.

The piston engine is in the centerline of the aircraft, mounted behind the passengers. You have seen that kind of engine before on the Piper Arrow and estimate the HP to be about 200. You know that engine burns 11 gal/hr average. The fuel tank ( 6′ x 2′ x 1′) is mounted under the passenger seats.

Explain your assessment of the mission of the aircraft and why.

What is the gross weight of the aircraft? (round to 2 decimals) Use the tire information to help you with this. And then, use the Force, my young Jedi…

What is the range of the aircraft? (Round to the nearest whole number)

What is the total wing area and chord? (Round to 1 decimal)
