Length: 450-600 words, or roughly 1.5-2 pages, typed, double-spaced.

Please note:  Papers must be submitted through Canvas in order to receive a grade.  Do not email your paper directly to me. You should also turn in a hard copy in class.  If you do not submit a hard copy, you will not receive any feedback on your essay.  You may, of course, discuss it with me during office hours.

The purpose of this assignment is to explore in depth one of the readings assigned in class and to give you an opportunity to explore a perspective on rhetorical approaches to publics and counterpublics. You should choose one of the assigned course readings that is marked with an asterisk (*) from the “Course readings” or “Supplementary Readings” on Canvas (Files) and read it carefully. Then, in your essay, you should 1) summarize briefly the main ideas of the essay, including its purpose, the concepts the author(s) used, and the main conclusions or findings of the essay; 2) explain what you learned from the essay, including how the essay defines or operationalizes the idea of a public, the public sphere, or a counterpublic, as appropriate; 3) discuss how the concepts the author used might apply to other publics or counterpublics; and 3) whatever else about the article you find noteworthy.

You should, of course, provide a full bibliographic citation (MLA 8th edition or Chicago Manual 17th edition) for the article and anything else you cite in your essay (e.g. other course readings, news or opinion sources you cite for specific empirical claims) and you should write in a formal (though not stiff or pompous) academic voice. The assignment will probably be easier if you find the article that most interests and engages you. Also, be sure that you have chosen an article marked with an asterisk.

In addition to the general criteria General Criteria for Evaluating Written Work 2020.docx Download General Criteria for Evaluating Written Work 2020.docx, your analysis will be graded on how well you identify important concepts in the rhetorical analysis of publics and counterpublics as well as its form and mechanics.  Be sure to choose an essay that is marked with an asterisk.  If you have another scholarly essay that you would prefer to analyze, you must get permission from the instructor in advance. Papers that do not analyze an appropriate essay will receive a grade of C or lower.
