Chapter 5 of the book “Collaborative Approaches to Resolving Conflict” by Isenhart and Spangle deals with Facilitation, what it consists of and what the work of facilitators is, what situations require a facilitator, how the process is carried out, and what responsibilities the facilitators have, among many other things.
I want to focus my summary on understanding what Facilitation is. In the book, we can see how there are currently a wide variety of definitions to describe Facilitation. Still, they all summarize the same thing; Facilitation is a process that a neutral person carries out to help groups that need interaction to increase effectiveness, mainly in the workplace when you have to solve problems or improve the decision-making process. The main difference between a facilitator and a mediator is that Facilitation is used in large groups to solve less clear and more complex problems. Mediations are to solve more defined issues in a more private setting. The Facilitation promotes a collaborative relationship between the members of the groups that will participate. The facilitator must have intrinsic knowledge of the groups he will deal with to guide and promote understanding and problem-solving in a neutral way.
