FC Anthropology Human Primates from Non Human Primates Discussion

Description

Answer 2 of the questions provided

1.  What data and reasoning did de Waal and Sapolsky use to discuss what we  can learn about human primates from non-human primates? Specifically  look at two of these areas- dominance hierarchies, networking and  forging alliances, conflicts/violence, conflict resolution, and  cooperation. Do they see humans as a completely different and unique  species or as just different by degree? What is your opinion- do you see  humans as unique in kind or just different by degree? (Note- focus on  the primate data, not the elephants).

2. What does Sapolsky state about the human primate compared to other primates? Does he see us as unique in kind or just different by degree to other primates? What data and reasoning does he give to state we’re just like any other animal? What data and reasoning does he give to state we have the same basic design but we put it to novel use? Do you agree or disagree with Sapolsky’s perspective (explain your answer)?

3. What are the key differences between the Gombe Chimps and the Tai Chimps? Address each of the following- environment, tool making and use, hunting strategies and success, and food sharing. What is responsible for these intra-species differences (within species)?

4. What can a comparison of chimpanzees and bonobos reveal about the human primate? We are equally genetically related to these two ape species. Which species are we more similar to? Specifically address at least two of the following areas to compare and contrast- tool making and use, violence (both within group and between groups), dominance hierarchies, conflict resolution, hunting for food. In your view which species of ape are we more similar to (explain your answer)?
