Excelsior College Prevalence of PTSD in Military Veterans Questions

Part I: Based on your opinion, your experiences, and what you have learned so far in this course answer the following question.

We often hear that the prevalence of PTSD in our veterans is so much higher than for civilian groups. Discuss why you think the general public makes this assumption.

Part II: Review the module notes, readings, and resources in Part I.

Now let’s apply the module notes and readings to the following questions:

1. Based on your readings, describe the culture that exists in the military and how this culture fosters resilience or contributes to trauma.
2. The rates of suicide and homelessness among veterans are extremely high. Discuss how community-level support could be instrumental in helping veterans return to civilian life.
3. Military sexual assault contributes to the prevalence of PTSD in many military veterans. After reviewing the video “Female Vets: A Soldier’s Story” discuss how MSA contributes to PTSD and identify interventions being made to assist these survivors.
4. Describe ways in which veterans’ PTSD can affect children and families. Identify at least one intervention found to be beneficial to children and families.
