ESPM 101A Problem set 2
Description
For this assignment, we will ask you to write short answers for 4 out of 6 questions. These questions will cover classes 8-14 and focus on explaining and critiquing key course concepts, using examples from the lectures and readings. Each answer should be around 500 words but we will be flexible if you need a bit more. The rubric is below.
I choose Four Topic:
2. We heard from Ken Worthy about alienation and dissociation. Explain what these states of mind mean and why these might matter for our everyday behavior. Use an example of a product or practice you use daily to work through this. Then comment on the role of alienation and dissociation in making transitions. Are they both barriers and opportunities, and if so, how?
3. Define what leverage points are and how they can change a system in broad terms. Pick an example of a sustainability transition (real or hypothetical) and apply 3-4 of the leverage points that Meadows identifies to this example. Explain how these might work and what interventions might be taken.
4. We heard about Germany’s Energiewende vision/process. Explain 3-4 lessons for governance from the Energiewende that you might apply to supporting climate action in the US context. These should include both innovative ideas and pitfalls.
5. Pick an example of a sustainability transition (real or hypothetical) and work through how this might be democratized. What does democratization mean for you, and what are 3-4 ways that could be used to bring more diverse voices into the transition so as to give them more of a real say?
