Environmental Science Question
Question Description
I’m working on a environmental science writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
1) Watch a TedTalk given by Virginia farmer Joel Salatin called Cows, Carbon, and Climate, & then answer the following questions.
a) What does Salatin say is the herbivore’s “classic role in nature?”
b) How does he suggest that today’s cattle ranchers can allow herbivores to perform their “classic role” while raising livestock for meat production?
c) In Salatin’s opinion, how can herbivores like cows actually have a positive, as opposed to a negative, impact with respect to climate change?
d) How many pounds of biomass is produced per acre on Salatin’s farm? How does this compare to the farms around him.
e) What did you find most interesting about Salatin’s talk.
2) Using the Regenerative Farming in Georgia storymap produced by KSU student Jonathan Scott, find one Georgia farm that is engaged in sustainable meat production. Read the information provided by Jonathan, and then visit the farm’s website to learn more about their farm. What do they claim makes them different from industrial meat producers, i.e., why do they feel that they’re farming in a way that can be called “regenerative,” or sustainable? Based on the information provided in Jonathan’s storymap and on the farm’s website, do you think that it’s likely that these farms have reduced their ecological footprint in comparison to industrial meat producers? Why or why not?
