  1. Type the name of the student whose outline you are reviewing.
  2. Context and Critical Conversation: How clear and specific is the context for the argument? Is it clear what the debate or conversation is between experts on this topic? If not, what’s missing and how can the writer address this?
  3. Argument: What do you think is the main argument in this essay? (The writer argues that…) How clear and specific is the thesis? Is it arguable (not a fact or info report)? Does it show the writer’s independent thought? What suggestions do you have to improve the thesis? NOTE: if you’re having a hard time identifying the question/problem/issue or the thesis, say so and focus on how to help the writer clarify the argument. They need to know it’s an issue!
  4. Organization: Are the questions arranged in a logical order from the reader’s perspective? How do you think ideas could be re-arranged to help you (or any other reader) understand the argument?
  5. Gaps: Are there any gaps between ideas? Are there any unanswered questions that should be addressed? What do you think should be added?
  6. Evidence: Does the writer provide specific evidence from relevant sources to support the argument? Are there places where evidence/support is needed?
  7. Overall Feedback: What are the strengths of this outline–what worked well? What could be better, and what changes do you suggest to improve it?
  8. Response to writer’s self-assessed strengths/weaknesses: Did the writer do well in the areas they identified as strengths? Did the writer do less well in the areas they identified as weaknesses? What suggestions do you have to help them improve on the weaknesses?
  9. Response to writer’s questions/concerns: Address the writer’s questions and concerns directly.
