Development of Robin Hood Character Discussion
Description
our midterm critical paper, which is due in class on Monday, October 24, should be an
essay comparing and contrasting the development of Robin Hood’s character in one of the
early ballads and in A Gest of Robin Hood. How do the authors in each of these texts develop
Robin Hood’s character similarly and differently? You should pay attention in your analysis not
only what we are told about Robin Hood’s character in each text but also the significance of
what we are told. Is Robin Hood equally wise and/or strong in each of the texts? Is he
differently so in each? Is he more innocent or experienced in one or the other; more immature or
mature? Why would this be the case, in terms of the respective storytellers’ aims? What about
his religious dimension? Is this stable across both texts or enhanced in one or the other? Is he a
hero, in both texts, given to reflection or action—or to both?
