DePaul University To Kill a Mockingbird Conflict Question

DePaul University To Kill a Mockingbird Conflict Question

Description

In order to explore conflict as it relates to race, at the end of the quarter each student must complete a paper of no less than five (5) double-spaced typewritten pages

based on their reading of the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” More specifically, each
student should analyze the conflicts faced by Atticus, Jeb, Scout, Ms. Caroline, and Aunt
Alexandra and identify the conflict handling mode that each used each time and, if they
used different conflict handling modes why did they do so, and if they did not, what were
the consequences. Finally, each student should also contrast the conflict handling mode
used in Tom Robinson’s trial with the conflict handling modes of the others as described
above.

When it comes to assessing the various conflicts mentioned in the essay they need to be described vividly.

For example this is a conflict journal that I had from this class.

1. the person(s) with whom you were/are in conflict:

My dad
2. the location of the conflict;

Our office
3. the general facts relevant to the conflict:

There is water damage in the wall of my house, and I want to get it professionally fixed but my dad wants to teach me how to fix things in my house. I feel that since I am already getting work done in my house then this is the perfect time to fix it.
4. the parties’ positions on the issue(s) in conflict;

Me: want to get the wall professionally fixed

Dad: want to teach me how to do it myself
5. the parties’ needs and interests in the conflict;

Me: there is a hole in the plaster, and I feel that it is important for us to start small in fixing the house, as I haven’t done anything like this before.

Dad: He wants to teach me how to fix things around the house, as I am a new homeowner
6. which strategies or techniques that we have discussed that you used;

We were competing and then ended up collaborating. I told him that we should speak with the contractor that we have working on the house to see what needs to be done to fix it. That way we would actually know all that needs to be done and can make a more informed decision.
7. the success of failure of those strategies and techniques and why they succeeded or
failed;

This succeeded, as we were bringing in a more informed third party to help bring light to the situation
8. the resolution, if any

We are getting the wall professionally fixed, as it is a lot more work than we originally anticipated.
9. which other strategies or techniques that you could have used, but did not;

I could have used the strategy that my mom suggested, which was to go behind his back and do it in the first place.
10. why failed to use those strategies;

I didn’t want to add to the fire and wanted to settle it subtly with as few problems as possible.

11. your feelings or emotions, before, during, and after the conflict.

Before: I was very upset when I first discovered the damage, as it was covered by furniture.

During: I was frustrated, as I felt like my dad was not listening to what I was saying.

After: I am happy, that we were able to come to a peaceful conclusion to our disagreement.

This needs to be done in paragraph form in the paper to the conflicts that are noted. Please talk about how the conflict handling modes change between the characters as the conflict progresses.

The conflict handling modes are Competing, Accommodating, Avoiding, Compromising, and Collaborating.
