- Example 1:
In 2015, Southwest Airlines became the first U.S domestic airline to utilize Big Data analytics to improve their overall fuel efficiency. Fuel, is a highly volatile commodity and companies are typically exposed to excessive pricing risks, if not properly hedged. In collaboration with GE, Southwest successfully deployed GE’s Flight Efficiency Services (FES) unit which aimed to optimize fuel consumption. The Big Data system ran on a secure industrial internet, using cloud computing and cutting-edge software and analytics. The FES system permitted Southwest to obtain analytics on each individual plane and flights to uncover how decisions altered its profitability. For the first time, Southwest was able to take a closer look into its planned versus actuals, which directly impacted the organization’s bottom line. The system itself, is powered by Predix, which is GE’s cloud-based industrial software platform, that collects real-time data from active planes. Some of the variables captured in consideration of fuel usage optimization were wind speeds, ambient temperatures, weight of plane, maximum thrust and other key influencing variables. The goal for FES was to transform a torrent of raw data about individual flights into actionable insights that optimize airline operations (GE, 2014).
- Another area where Southwest has deployed Big Data analytics has been in flight safety data. In collaboration with Megaputer Intelligence, both companies developed an analytical software, termed PolyAnalyst, which aimed to collect, disseminate and prescribe flight operations, while minimizing overall safety risk. By utilizing their Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) database, which collects voluntary feedback from pilots on abnormal occurrences in different phases during flights, Southwest was able to identify patterns and prescribe actions that mitigated these occurrences (Ananyan, 2004).
