Curry College Criminal Justice Radical Criminology Discussion
Description
After watching the Hot Coffee documentary respond to the following:
One could argue that the general public, and even those in politics, journalism, and many criminal justice professors (generalists) have a very limited, perhaps even distorted view of the courts–both criminal and civil. In criminal cases, the long and complicated examinations of seemingly simple concepts are lost in short briefs and sound bites. The intersection of individual rights vs corporate (or govt) interests in civil cases (and how mandatory arbitration agreements have closed access to criminal hearings for crimes committed in work environments) definitely touches into the criminal justice realm. Many more similarities exist across the two systems, but if using radical criminology as a frame, one can see clearly see the veins of the powerful controlling the poor (which one could argue today comprises “the99%”).
Identify some innovation or “reform” of some sort in the courts and discuss its utility now and in the near future (or alternatively, what’s its shelf-life?) relative to a radical criminology framework.
