Description
Assignment Instructions
Intention of Assignment: This practical assignment is intended to ease you into thinking like a legal professional.
Additionally, the assignment should introduce students into legal research, legal analysis, and legal writing, while stressing
the need to follow directions. It is highly recommended that you use a current event with a simple legal controversy.
Grading does not generally assess if your legal conclusion is correct, but encourages critical thinking and legal reasoning.
Prompt: You are a paralegal in a law firm. Your supervising attorney, who is occupied in trial preparations on another case,
has an important assignment for you. The firm’s client was recently involved in a public controversy. Your supervising
attorney has asked you to write a legal memorandum regarding the client’s event/case and they will review it when they
are available.
Current Event: Select any current event in the United States that has a legal question. The event must be ripe, meaning
legal question or controversy must still exist and not theoretical. Your current event may be civil or criminal in nature.
Party: Your current event should have at least two obvious parties in the controversy. One of the parties in the event must
be your client and you should write from that perspective. If you selected a filed criminal case as your current event, you
may not write as the prosecution.
