CUNY Lehman College Neighborhood Research Washington Heights Paper

Directions: Students will choose a neighborhood to research and write about. (You may choose your own neighborhood if you wish)

The paper will consist of three parts:

Part 1 will require you to look into characteristics and history the neighborhood.

Part 2 will require you to look into the crime stats of your neighborhood.

Part 3 will require you to interview 1 person from the neighborhood (this can be done virtually). The final part will focus on the perspective of your interviewee; therefore no outside research is required for this part.

Part 1: Describe the neighborhood. (1-2 Pages)

Start by talking about the:

The location

Demographics

Economic Status

Physical design (layout, infrastructure, businesses, etc.)

Describe the history: How has your neighborhood changed through the years?

Part 2: Describe the crime rate of the neighborhood (1-2 pages)

·You can talk about the type of crimes that occur, when they occur and how the police are addressing them.

Part 3: Interview 1 person that lives in the neighborhood (the name of the interviewee can remain anonymous). In a narrative, write about their experience living in the neighborhood. (2 pages)

Total length of Paper: 4-6 pages (not including cover or reference page)

Example of questions you can ask your interviewee:

1. How long they have been living in the neighborhood?

2. What they have seen changed in the neighborhood?

3. Whether or not they feel safe in their neighborhood? And Why?

4. What they think can be done to improve their neighborhood?
