CSUN Linguistics Transcribing Data & Differences in Description and Analysis Case
Description
PART 1:
In the transcription (“LING Transcribing Data” document), you may have noticed that, in both cases, participants’ turns overlap or get cut off in some places. Provide an analysis of each case in 1-2 paragraphs, and then compare them (in a paragraph or so).
In the analysis, consider the type of interruption. Also, what is the speaker doing by overlapping with, or interrupting, the other speaker’s turn.
Romaniuk’s analysis of Clinton’s cackle is your model. The task will be graded based your ability to produce accurate transcription and to analyze data that is grounded on the data.
The first extract is from the same conversation by Stan and Joyce (“S” and “J”), and the second is from two female friends, Hyla and Nancy (“H” and “N”.
Joyce and Stan
(background: This conversation occurs a few minutes after the earlier excerpt. Stan is continuing to ask for Joyce’s advice on where to go to buy a hat and is describing the kind he wants.)
Hyla and Nancy
(background: Nancy had just come back from a dermatologist and is reporting to Nancy what the doc had told her about acne. The beginning of the conversation is a bit hard to hear. Nancy is saying, “He says it’s all inside you it’s an emotional thing’n…”)

PART 2:
- Analyze the 4 paragraphs and post your responses to the questions below here. Limit each response to 30 words.
What happens BEFORE the excerpt (in Paragraph 1)?
What happens AFTER the excerpt as a whole (in Paragraphs 2-4)?
- How is each paragraph (2-4) different? Can you track the development of the analysis throughout the paragraphs? Consider the kinds of analysis presented and how the author incorporates other research findings into hers.
- Resources: “Pages from 2016 Romaniuk” document
- PART 3:
- Read the example of a description and of an analysis below. What are the differences between the two? List all the differences you can find and think of.
Description = “What is the data/result?”
Example: Forty percent of female participants used hedging devices, specifically “let’s” and “maybe” when proposing a group activity to all-female groups.
Analysis = “What do the results/data mean?”
Example: In contrast with findings from Lakoff (1975), less than half of college age women use hedges to make propositions to same sex groups. This may be a result of the increased assertiveness of college-aged females given their adoptions of more powerful language, such as…, to perform the same action.
