Single Shot Sequences – The Long Take
Cuarón wanted plenty of long takes – in the explosion at the opening, for example, and in the car scene, and in the Refugee camp. The use of these long takes, allows us to immerse ourselves into this world. Cuarón breaks away from the usual use of the documentary film aesthetic and by doing so demands our attention completely. Because there are few chances for rest throughout this film we feel the mounting need and urgency of the narrative. Alfonso Cuaron explains that he liked using Long Takes during Children of Men because it creates the element of time. He believed a balance of between the background and the character – and permits the character to blend into the environment.
There is no stronger example than the sequence where Theo runs thru the streets to find Kee. Describe this sequence and discuss what makes it so powerful. During filming fake blood splashed my mistake on the lens, do you think it adds to the scene? Was it a fortunate accident.
