CSULB Microbiology Bacterial Genera Essay
Description
Encyclopedia of Bacterial Genera: Morganella
Perform some bibliographic research to retrieve relevant information about the bacterial lineage.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
At least four scientific / peer-reviewed references
Based on the reading, write a review/summary (double-spaced, Arial, font size 12, maximum length 4 pages, no more than half a page can be figure(s)) based on the scientific research, which must include the following information:
(Follow this structure!)
a) Title: aka something g mentioning the name of the bacterium and why it is interesting!
b) Taxonomy, classification & relation to other groups of bacteria, what are to most important species in the genus?
c) Morphology & Physiological characteristics (growth, temperature, pH, required nutrient, etc.)
d) History (identification by who, why, when, how, …)
e) Genomic information (patricbrc.org): size (in nucleotides), how many genes, some interesting comments, structure of the genome (linear vs. circular chromosome, one vs. multiple, plasmids)
f) “Something interesting” (pick one aspect or a combination of few, eventually this will require some additional research – if you find some interesting facts not in peer review literature, these information need to be from direct sources (aka not something like a website mention that this is use by some company … ). The source
I. If the bacterium is important for some environmental processes: Where was the genus identified, What is the ecological niche of the genus. Relevance for environmental process (e.g., nutrient-cycling, photosynthesis, bioremediation) What is the distribution range of the genus (i.e., where is it found, what type of environment, etc. )
ii. If the bacterium is important for some Biotechnological applications: What is its economic importance, what company are using it, what type of application (Fermentation, Enzyme production, Drugs, …)
iii. If the bacterium is known to cause infectious disease: Disease and etiology (check the glossary), virulence factors, reservoir and vector, mode of transmission, infectious dose, pathogenesis and symptoms, treatment, and prevention
