Hi everyone,
One of my favorite Supreme Court cases is Brown v. Board of Education (1954). The landmark case unanimously declared that segregated public schools for black and white children went against the 14th Amendment and violated the equal protection clause. This ended decades of racial segregation in public schools, which should have been handled decades ago with the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) case, but at least it was finally declared unconstitutional to racially segregate these children. Earl Warren, a Chief Supreme Court Justice at the time, stated “We conclude that the doctrine of ‘separate but equal’ has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” This highly controversial case sparked the civil rights movement and paved the way for racial integration, making it illegal to separate black children from white children in public schools. Not only was this case significant by setting blacks and whites more equal, but it also overturned Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) where Homer Plessy challenged the law by refusing to move to the “colored car” on the train. I would hope that we can all agree in this day and age, that there should not be a ‘separate but equal’ clause, and that we should all be treated the same and be protected equally under the U.S. Constitution. These two landmark cases set a precedent for future cases involving racial equality.
The quicker you get this done the bigger tip I’ll leave! It has to be done by tomorrow at the latest 🙁 I’m sorry!
