It is commonly recognized that most workplaces today are multi-generational. Although different perspectives, values, expectations, work habits, and communication styles among the generations are expected and considered an organizational asset, the differences also may create tension among workers.
According to Kaye and Jordan-Evans (2003), generational mindsets differ with regard to:

- Learning Opportunities and Career Development
- Talent Management and Performance Appraisals
- Two-Way Communications and Trust
- Recognition and Respect
Despite these differences, the focus in the workplace should be on commonalities. Successful
organizational leaders develop strategies that result in the generations working effectively together to build a community of change agents and learners. Successful organizations are talent-smart, adaptable, innovative, and creative in recruiting and supporting new talent, while retaining the present talent.
With the above in mind, based on your experience as well as the information presented in the readings for this module, discuss strategies that organizations and their leaders can develop to emphasize commonalities among the generations and build a welcoming culture. What can organizations and their leaders do to keep their best talent engaged and productive? Strategies should address what the four generations value and want to experience in the workplace. Generational differences in work methods, tools, and procedures also should be considered.
