Example 2:

Self-driving vehicles (SDVs) have been tested for decades now. These vehicles pose an ethical issue when it comes to the safety of the computer run vehicle. The theory behind SDVs is that replacing the human factor of split decision making by an automatic, algorithm will make the roads safer. Unfortunately, there continues to be accidents related to SDVs. Safety is the reason why stakeholders advocate for further development of SDVs, however, when accidents of the SDVs occur that argument is challenged. Governments and communities are just some of the groups that challenge the safety of SDVs. One concern is how the algorithm is developed to respond appropriately in a crash. Ethical guidelines and best practice documents have been established over the years to assist SDV programmers in developing ethically-sound crash algorithms, but they still remain vague, incoherent and ineffective (Ryan, 2020). Semi-trucks are now being tested to be self-driving to help combat the truck driver shortage. It will be interesting to see how the algorithms are programed to ensure safety for people and drivers around the truck.

Manufacturers in recent years have had to provide more transparency to their vehicles being tested. The more negative information about their products that is being exposed in the public has forces this change. Not being completely truthful about the safety of a product in effort to maintain the image of the company is unethical behavior (Kerzner, 2017). A company cannot only disclose the positives of their projects, they must also let potential consumers know the negative along with plans to solve the issues.
