Many retailers in the clothing industry sell their products at a low price in exchange for using workers at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions (Radclyffe-Thomas, 2018). This is what we call sweatshops, which will be the topic of this post.

SheIn is a popular online fast-fashion retailer from China with unethical labor practice issues. Last year, BBC News reported that a number of staff across its six sites worked 75 hours a week, including working three shifts per day with only one day off a month (Jones, 2021). The interview with SheIn’s staff informed their unethical practice despite the Chinese labor law that prohibited over 40 hours of work per week. In addition, SheIn, until recently, posted a false statement on its website that the factories the company used were certified by international labor standards bodies (Waldersee, 2021).

In contrast, American Apparel’s sweatshop-free business was a success by providing fair wages and benefits and showing the production process made only in the US (Verklan, 2021). They went bankrupt for a different reason, but the anti-sweatshop activities like American Apparel led to the current business trend of sustainable products of various kinds in the market.

PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (n.d.) states four-pillar values: responsibility, respect, fairness, and honesty. SheIn seems to violate all ethical values in its business practice.

Companies must comply with the labor law and provide fair working conditions to protect workers. The case describes an ethical dilemma not only for businesses but also for consumers between individual benefits and doing the right thing
