This course requires students to view a live theatre event and write a production critique following the departmental guidelines. This page provides information about your Production Critique, which serves as your final exam for this course. Once you have completed your Production Critique, please submit it in Webcourses.

Show Requirements

Orlando-based students are encouraged to attend a mainstage play at Theatre UCF or one of our partner theatres, Orlando Repertory Theatre or Orlando Shakespeare Theater. For students outside of Orlando or who are otherwise unable to attend a play at these three theatres, you must select another production to be approved by the course instructor.

To meet course requirements, this play must be a full-length, fully produced performance of a straight play or musical at a community, professional, or university theatre. Examples of things that do NOT qualify for this assignment might include: your younger sibling’s beauty pageant, stand-up comedy, cabaret performances, drag shows, or improv shows. You may not use a show that you saw prior to the start of the semester.

What to Watch For

When you attend the performance, you may want to discreetly take notes. Make sure you bring a notepad and pencil with you so that you are not writing on your phone! Watch for the following elements, all which you must write about in your production critique:

• Acting
• Directing/Staging (and Choreography and Music Direction, if applicable)
• Costumes
• Lighting
• Scenery
• Sound
• Describe the meaning, morale, or lesson of the play

Each of the above is worth points toward your total grade. To get full credit in each area, you need to describe it in detail using theatre specific vocabulary you’ve learned throughout this course.
