Central Texas College Drama Literary Analysis Essay
Description
Drama, as a genre of literature, is unique in the way that it presents and develops its story, characters, and themes. Because there is not typically a narrator or narrative in drama, as there is in the novel or the short story, the audience must rely on the setting of the play and the characters’ dialogue, facial expressions, and actions to tell them the story. Readers must also consider these elements in order to develop their interpretations of the play’s themes and characters.
For this third paper, students should consider the text of the play, the time period in which it was written, historical and cultural elements, and outside information that could help to contribute to the focus and themes presented through the text of the play by analysis.
Think about specific questions that could help the outline/organizational process for this paper such as:
* Who are the main characters of this play? How do they contribute to the play as a whole? As an individual?
*How does the setting and environment contribute to the play? Would certain elements of the play change if the setting changed?
*What is the purpose of the play? Why did Glaspell or Shakespeare write this play?
*Who is the audience? Why?
* Is there symbolism in this play? Is there an underlying meaning to certain elements?
If you choose to look up information about the playwright/author, that is fine, but your essay will need to include not only the parenthetical citations for the play itself, but also any outside information you choose to include.
During the drafting process, the class will focus mostly individually on understanding explication, organization of ideas, and exploring concepts relating and supporting the essay’s structure, development, purpose, consistency, and MLA format (including of course not only correct parenthetical citations but also a works cited page).
Your Purpose: Your purpose is to present an arguable and reasonable explication/critical analysis for the play “Trifles” OR Twelfth Night. You should present an arguable thesis at the end of your introductory paragraph that directs the frame of the paper and the support that will follow. It is suggested you include research for this paper that helps support your analysis of this play.
Your Audience: Your actual audience for this essay is your instructor; for your ideal audience, think of your reader as someone who is unfamiliar with reading a drama and is unsure of possible themes and symbolism the playwright is trying to address in the play.
