Assignment: Connecting the Literature to a Current Issue  

Goal: Connect one, two, or three works we have read to a current day issue that matters to you.

USE THESE WORKS: 

1) “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” by Mary Wollstonecraft

2) “The Subjection of Women by John Stuart Mill 

3) “Mother and Poet” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning 

Step One: Select the issue you want to explore: Women’s rights and freedoms and compare them to the three works and how they have evolved today. 

Step Two:  Identify how the three works speak to that issue in some way.

Step Three: in 3-4 pages, explore the relationship between that work/those works and the issue of your concern. Your personal essay should

1)         explain why that topic matters to you
2)         identify the connections between the work or works you have chosen and that issue, including what advice or lessons the work or works offer on the topic
3)         Address whether you believe we have made progress on this topic. What is your evidence of that progress or lack of it?  
4)         Address why it is we have made progress or have failed to make it?
5)         Can include outside sources if you like.
