Central Michigan University Dream Theatre Job Discussion
Description
Module 10 Discussion Post
Consider the theatre jobs explored in this module, and throughout this course. Which of these jobs do you think would be the most interesting to you, or would best align with your skill set? What skills might you need to further develop to be successful at this job?
Search the Internet for a person who has your “dream theatre job.” Start with a theatre organization you’ve learned about in this course, or begin searching in a city you know you would love to live in. Check out their staff page, like the “Meet the Team” page at Orlando REP.
Once you’ve found a job you think you’d love, respond with the following:
The name of the theatre and title of the position,
Why you think you would love this job,
What skills you would bring to this position, and
- Ways in which you think this job would challenge you.
- In addition to your own post, please respond thoughtfully to at least two of your peers.
- Peer 1:The position that would most coincide with my interests and skill set would be that of a playwright; I would create primarily straight plays rather than musicals. Ideally, because I am moving to California to continue pursuing Character Animation in TV and Feature animation, I would also be involved in a theatre there: the Playwright’s Arena being my primary interest. Narrative writing comes very naturally to me, so the idea of continuously creating new narrative works that address societal issues or simply dabble in harmless fantasy and fun would be incredibly enjoyable. I have written over eight original stories, accumulating a cumulative word count of 435,000 as of late. To this position, I bring years of experience, a positive outlook, and the ability to rapid-fire several suggestions for narrative progression. That being said: I primarily enjoy writing romance and fantasy, so I believe that one of the challenging things would be writing outside of that zone, as well as the constant pressure to continually release new works, while also prioritizing new adventures, new experiences, and new quality—because of that, I would need to work on being well-adjusted to writing outside of my comfort zone, and develop techniques to deal with and address artistic burn-out.
- Peer 2:Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts – Traffic Manager (Marketing/Creative)This job would be of my interest because it is a job where I can find, manage, and help execute various projects for the theater and crew. I am able to apply my creativity to promote the various projects and the Dr. Phillips Center while also challenging myself to make connections in order to find various projects for the performing arts center. Because of my previous interest and basic education in business and marketing through high school and college, I would bring various skills to this job position. This would include the knowledge from the training of the Lean Six Sigma program, where I was able to get a white Belt certification with the basics of business management, which would help manage projects. I also have Microsoft Office experience and certification, which is needed to make the necessary documents in order to negotiate for projects and execute them in an organized manner. My previous volunteer and academic experience has also given me time management and communication skills, which are key for a decent performance in this position. This job would challenge me in making a network to find projects and get all the necessary resources to execute the project.
