In Chapter 4 the historical changes speed up quite a bit in the Mediterranean region. Most people know a lot about ancient Egypt, but many do not know about Nubia, another powerful society to the south of them on the Nile River. Both of these areas became more connected to the rest of the world in this era.

In Chapter 4, you also see the rise of powerful Assyrian Empire (in today’s Iraq) and the first Persian Empire (based in today’s Iran). In addition, you see the emergence of a collection of city-states that will become especially influential in the next chapter: the Greeks.
