Purpose: Demonstrate understanding of theoretical concepts explaining health behaviors and their application in a community setting.

Description: Written report that describes a health or risk behavior and analyzes the influences of two health behavior theory concepts on increasing or decreasing that behavior, as appropriate.

Steps:

1. Select a health or risk behavior of interest to you. The behavior should be specific, e.g., not “healthy eating” but “fruit and vegetable consumption” (health) or “saturated fat consumption” (risk).

2. Research to find epidemiological information about your chosen behavior. Questions to answer in this section: How common is it (rates, percentages)? Who is more likely to do this behavior (demographics)? Why is this behavior important (what does it lead to/prevent)? Sources must be government reports from national datasets or academic articles.

3. Review the health behavior theory (HBT)

select two individual concepts (not two theories) to describe in your assignment. Examples of concepts are self-efficacy, cue to action, perceived norm, attitude, perceived barriers, etc.

4. Find academic articles that address your concepts in relation to health or risk behaviors (articles do not have to be specific to your chosen behavior).

5. Describe the role of each concept in promoting or decreasing the behavior, using your academic articles to support your statements.
