Introduction

“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.”

– Yogi Berra, Former New York Yankees Catcher

Consider the planning and structure of a persuasive research essay. Learn how to develop an effective structural map that best reflects the analysis and thinking in your essay, and that will serve as a blueprint for your draft.

Now that you have assembled material for your project, it is time to consider the structure of the essay you are planning to write. Consider developing an effective structural map that best reflects the analysis and thinking in your essay that will serve as a blueprint for your draft.

An outline is the skeleton of a good essay; therefore, it is important to think through your outline carefully. You will want to have enough information to help you formulate the complete essay.

The writing process varies significantly from writer to writer, so the time to complete the draft and final revision of this and other essays can vary significantly. Some writers complete much of the revision process while writing the first draft, while others rush-write the first draft and then rewrite and revise in later drafts. The point is, the time to complete a piece of writing can vary greatly from writer to writer. Actual time spent here might range from a couple of hours to a couple of days depending on your writing style. When your audience sees that you’ve done your homework and that you understand their perspective on an issue, you build credibility (or trust) with them. When your audience trusts you, you can more easily bring other persuasive tactics into play. You have developed your communication skill by learning about prewriting techniques like outlining that help you persuade others more effectively. Now, you will fill out your research paper into complete sentences to form the first draft of your research essay. As you do so, think about how you are applying the employability skills of innovation, communication, and problem solving.

Depending on your own writing process, you have probably been doing a considerable amount of revising and editing of your work already in this course. The writing process is never strictly linear. Here, you will focus on revising and editing principles as they apply to a longer work.

The final draft of your persuasive research essay is essentially a revision of your first draft.
