California State University Northridge Velocity Curves Discussion
Description
Velocity Curves
Purpose: Educators, coaches, and therapists benefit from knowing the universal pattern of postnatal growth and physiological maturation, as well as the typical pattern of aging in adults. Yet, they constantly work with individuals who have their own timing and potential for growth. Therefore, it is important to be able to evaluate an individual’s status and potential in order to help him or her set and achieve reasonable goals. In the field of kinesiology, one must be able to compare an individual with the average growth pattern to see how they deviate, and what this means for their level of physiological maturation. This activity will allow you to assess two individual’s pattern of growth, and analyze how they compare to the average for their sex.
Course Learning Objectives Addressed:
- Compare and contrast different patterns of growth, and relate those patterns to physiological maturation.
Task: Click the link below to access height data for a male and a female and create a velocity curve for each of them.
( I will attach the height data below)
How to Create Velocity Curves: From the height data, calculate change in height from one year to the next. Make a column of numbers starting at 4.5 and going to 19.5. These represent the midpoint of time interval and will be used as the horizontal axis. Figure out how much growth occurred between all the ages represented in the data set. For example, the boy grew 5 cm between age 4 and 5 (111-106) so I would write 5 cm in the 4.5 column. The height in cm will be your vertical axis. Create a graph from this data. This is your velocity curve that shows us an individual’s rate of growth.
Once you have completed your curves do the following:
On the female velocity curve, make the following marks:
- Put an X when this female experienced her age at takeoff
- Draw a vertical line where this female experienced her Peak Height Velocity (PHV)
- Draw a vertical dashed line where she would experienced her menarche
- Make a circle where she would experienced her Peak Weight Velocity
On the male velocity curve, make the following marks:
- Put an X when this male experienced his age at takeoff
- Draw a vertical line where this male experienced his Peak Height Velocity (PHV)
- Make a circle where he would experience his Peak Weight Velocity
